Getting preview image of video files

Last Modified: 2010-04-23
I'd like to create a program that displays previews of video files (mpeg and avi, but also others if it's possible). I need to know how to read a video file and get a snapshop image of the video file at certain times (i.e. one preview image for the beginning of the video, one preview image that's taken from halfway through the video, and one from the end).

Can someone please help? This has been a project I'd like to make for a while now, but I just can't find out how to do this. The correct answer will provide example code, refer me to example code, or refer me to an open-source or freeware control or library that I can use in my solution.
