External monitor display is blank?

Hi all,
I have an HP nx9010 (ze8500 listed in bios) laptop running Win XPP with an external LCD monitor attached.  On startup, the attached monitor displays whatever the laptop displays until the 'select which user' screen comes up.  Then the monitor goes blank and stays that way?
The laptop has an ATI Radeon 1 GP 345M adapter and first thought it may be the driver.  I've excluded the LCD monitor as being the problem because it works flawlessly with another laptop connected.  I've checked hi and low in the settings in control panel pertaining to the display.  What am I missing?

Thanks for any prompt feedback.

Well, the 'user' did say that he would use Fn-F5 to enable the display.  Now nothing happens at all.  Sometimes even the laptop displays a blank screen....mouse pointer is there but nobody's home.  Is there a 'backdoor' to access the user profile for this setting?

Another thing I will mention is that there's a weird screen that appears after the Windows copyright screen and before the 'select a user' sign on screen.  It's there about 5 secs , has a strange design with "HP Invent" in the upper right corner.  The design almost looks like internal 'eDamage' (if there's such a thing).  I'm not sure what to make of it....it just makes me plain nervous.

Thanks for more feedback on this.

Yeah, you're right Watzman...I have spent hours experimenting with the different settings and it boggles me....especially since everything worked fine after plug 'n play install (around May 5th) up until about 2 weeks ago.  I even tried a system restore, but no luck.  The LCD's resolution should automatically be the same as the laptop, right? (since the LCD is used only as a "display" of the laptop's desktop, etc.)

I will try putting a CRT in place and see what happens.  After all, that was the original setup and  everything did work fine.

Any other thoughts anyone?

Thanks
