Adding an external email address to a distribution list

Hi,

I have setup a distribution list in AD for member of my local domain who use Exchange 03. I want to add external members that use a lotus notes server on a separate domain. I have tried adding a contact in AD and then specifing the external email address but this didnt work.

I dont want to implement this on Outlook but rather on the exchange server directly.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi,

Using a contact is the right way to do it. How did it not work?

Hello.  I assume the domains are not in the same tree; however, if they are, and the Exchange server can talk to the Notes server, the Notes connector will work.

If the companies are not connected, and what you really want is a list, then in the appropriate OU of AD Users and Computers:
1.  Create a New Group
2.  Choose Distribution as type and Universal as scope (can be used later)
3.  Ensure the group is mail enabled and create an intuitive name for it: the name will be the one chosen in the Global Address List
4.  Create a contact.
5.  Leave the default checkbox for e-mail address, and include an approriate alias.
6.  Click Modify, and enter the appropriate external email address.
7.  Next . . . Finish
8.  Create the rest of the contacts the same way.
9.  Sort the objects by type, click on the top contact--hold shift--click on the bottom contact.
10. On the highlighted contacts, Right-click --> Add to a group....
11.  Enter the name of the group.
12.  In Outlook, create a new message --> click To... and choose the distribution group.

When I originally added an external email contact it did not work. I have tried a different email address and it now seems to work fine. I just added it as a SMTP address.

Strange but problem solved thanks

Do you have the contacts in the Distribution Group now?
DaveyByrneAuthor Commented:
Yes they are in the Distribution group.

The two domains are not connected via the notes connector so I just added them as SMTP addresses and not lotus notes addresses as before.

They are saved as contacts in the group along with the AD exchange accounts and all are working.
