Moved messages come back to Inbox

I have a user running Outlook 2003 that has messages which automatically move back to his inbox after being sorted into folders.  I have tried everything under the sun to keep it from happening but nothing seems to be working.  I have an Exchange 2003 server running in a mixed mode domain soon to be native.  He does have a huge mailbox which is about 2.6GB, over 26,500 messages, and with over 100 folders under his inbox.

There doesn’t seem to be much of a pattern to when it happens, but generally the problem occurs after sorting messages at home, and then they all move back to the inbox when he connects the next morning in the office.  However on the weekends he will sort messages while offline, then come in Monday and everything is fine.

I have tried taking him in and out of cached mode, enabled and disabled offline e-mail, rebuilt his entire computer put on a fresh version of outlook 2003, updated office 2003 to SP1, cleaned out everything application in the background except essential services, and I’ve created new e-mail profiles for him several times.  Nothing that I have done so far has worked.

Has anyone come across this problem or have any ideas what might fix it?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

On the face of it it sounds like his .pst file is updated from the Exchange server when he reconnects. This would have the effect of losing the various changes he has made while offline.

Does anyone else in a similar situation suffer from the same symptoms (ie other users working offline for a time)?
