rsync fail problem

I'm running an rsync process to backup my hard drive to my firewire drive.    When this runs, most files work fine, however there are some wierd errors.

At the Linux beginner level, What does these errors mean?  how do I fix them?

It looks like you are having a couple of different types of errors...

all of the: mkstemp mydirectory/gtw_auto_pol/.delList.txt.bak.XodGWU failed: No such file or directory

are probably the result of the attempt to backup a temp directory that was filled with temp files or cache files that although existed when rsync started and did an inventory of the drives had been erased prioir to the app trying to copy it. I would change the rsync to ignore your cache folders.

use something like :
/usr/bin/rsync -auv --numeric-ids --exclude="*bak*" --exclude="*~" /path/to/source/ /path/to/destination/

use man rsync to see what some of your options are.

 rsync: recv_generator: mkdir "mydirectory/perl": Input/output error (2)

could be a permissions error, the user that is trying to backup the file does not have administrative rights to the directory in question.

I use rsync to backup linux and windows servers to a linux box using an application called rsnapshot from rsnapshot.org,

it is a piece of cake to set up and can be tweaked to include or ignore directories and file types.
