Installing mcAfee Virus Scan 9.0. Have IE. Asked to install Netscape plugin!

I am installing McAfee Virus Scan 9.0 on Win 98SE running IE6. When I try to update for the first time I am directed to McAfee's site and asked to download an Activator Plugin for Netscape. I am running IE 6 not Netscape. Netscape is not on the PC. If I download the plugin and try to install it I get an error....naturally. I cannot get Mcafee to recognise that I have IE 6 and so cannot update the antivirus.
Can anyone help.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Since the troubleshooting fixes will probably be a lot of work --

You may want to try downloading & installing the free Firefox browser to user for your first update -- at least to see if this gets you past the issue.
If you are using this URL to download, youmay want to verify the following:

McAfee requires "the ActiveX component download" & this may cause you browser to fail due to incompatible browser settings.
Verify that ActiveX downloads are enabled in your Internet Explorer security settings.

In your IE6 browser: select tools/'Internet Options'/Security tab --
Click 'Custom Level' button at bottom --
Scroll down to 'ActiveX controls & plug-ins/Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls -
*Set to 'Enable' ok/apply/ok -- then give the download another try.
