Connect to IRC server thru using .net

Hi...
Mad question...
I know nothing about this issue, so don't "shoot" me ok?

Is there any way I can connect to an IRC Server?
Make my own IRC client application?

Thanks...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Let me start by asking how experienced are you in writing TCP/IP code? IRC is not a trivial protocol. Here is a link to an explaination of that protocol with further links to the RFC's themselves. There are a lot of IRC clients available, some with source. Mostly you will find the code written in c or c++ and almost all of it pre .NET. While it is certainly possible to write it in a .NET language (VB, C++, C#), I haven't seen any surface yet.

If you were to do it, the community would welcome it. If you provided a really cool GUI, you might be able to even make a little money on it.

One more place to look is an open source client:
