Can i do a whois for my customers

We are going to start registering some domains for our customers. I would like  to be able to do a whois ( or something to determine if the domain is available)

i found a old article that suggested Net::Whois, but it appears that it does not work anymore. I think this was before the registrars started cracking on whois robots.

Thanks for any help

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I wrote an application for this a while ago that runs on Linux.  I had not posted it to my site yet because I wanted to clean it up a bit before I added it but since you were asking I put it up.
