Which Domain Controller authenticates user???

This is just an information question.  I have 3 domain controllers in a Windows 2003 Native Server environment.  Two are local to virginia and one is via a WAN connection to Dallas.  My question is, how does the login pick the server to authenticate to, and run the login script from?  I noticed that most of my users are attaching to the WAN connected Dallas server when in fact, the other servers are much closer.  Do I need to worry about this?  Is this a role issue?  Is there a way to force it to use a server that is more local to our network????

Thanks for your help.

go to active directory sites and services - create a new site called Dallas and put the dallas subnet in there - also ensure you have a global catalog server at YOUR location
