You have FIRST to configure SQL Mail:

Note that you need to follow the steps as described: i.e. configuring the MAPI profile as DOMAIN USER and configure the SQL Server Service AND SQL Server AGENT Service BOTH as the SAME Domain User !!!!

Once that is done, you can use xp_sendmail stored procedure to send out email...
Please post if you have any specific problems with this

Sucky thing about SQL 2000:

"NOTE: Due to the limitation of only providing extended MAPI support, SQL Server 2000 requires a Microsoft Outlook 2000 client (or later version). "

There are other options that involve using extended sps to communicate through SMTP instead.

I am currently testing:

Small correction:
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft SQL Server 2000. This problem was first corrected in SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1.

SQL Mail 2000 (SP1+)
works with Microsoft Outlook 98 with the 8.00.0220 SQLMap70.dll. This only applies if Outlook 98 is installed with Microsoft Exchange support (by choosing the Corporate or Email Workgroup Services option), even to connect to a SMTP/POP3 server.
