Distributing software using ghost or active directory

We have a basic active directory environment in place. We are looking to start distributing software and someone mentioned a component of ghostcast can do this, although I would prefer to use active directory.

How straight forward is it to distribute software on Windows 2000 pro pc's usind AD??

thanks in advance

I have never actually attempted this and im not sure if it can be done from a win2k domain controller (I use win2k3 myself), but there should be some options where you can setup the MSI files, so that when a user logs in the MSI file is run and the software is installed.

Active Directory software deployment options are not huge: you can only distribute MSI packages, which you can hopefully get from your software vendor, or you will have to create it yourself. You can distribute software with a per user or per computer policy and choose between assigning or publishing the packets; you can redeploy, uninstall and upgrade packages, but cannot, for example, manage licensing.
Depending on the number of users/machines you have on your network, you might have to watch for excessive network traffic and server overloading, but these are quite obvious considerations.
