Veritas Backup Exec 9 Media sets all say not appendable

I have set all tapes for infinite don't allow overwrite and infinite allow append. However as soon as a tape gets even a very small amount written to it for a backup, the next backup job will not use what is left. In the media tab for the media sets they all say not appendable after any job has run on any tape.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Do you have the job definitions set up to Append to media, overwrite if no appendable media?  The default is set to Overwrite media...

hi biotec

Do you get a specific error or alert when the job starts or does it just stay pending with a "Loading Media" message until cancelled?

Have you fully updated your BE build with all downloads from support.veritas.com?  Service Pack 2 remedies a lot of very basic bugs

Are you sure the tape isn't already full? If it is full you can't append to it anymore, then you need another tape.

Good point rindi - Backup Exce doesn't do real well with appendable media...I believe if it does a prescan and determines that the entire job won't fit - it won't attempt it...

Well, the setting is not to overwrite. I dont' get an error, everything just queues up and won't run. So if I have a 200GB tape and use 20GB then the rest of the tape sits in media as not appendable even though I set it to be infinite append. I do not think that I have the most current updates.
sirbountyCommented:
You might try creating a new media set.
Then change the job definition to point to the new media set.
Applying the updates would certainly be a viable option as well...
biotecAuthor Commented:
I'll do the updates and see if that helps. I don't believe that BE should not run a job on media just because the whole job won't fit on the tape. That is the point of having a library. What concerns me is that I specifically set it to infinite allow append and it automatically, regardless of the tape space used, sets it to do not allow append as soon as any job runs on that tape.

Unfortunately none of these really answered the question. It appears to be a bug and none of the patches worked, we even downloaded the newest version and it still did the same thing except now it says end marker unreadable.
