How to start a GUI Interface on a new Dell Linux Enterprise ES Server

Answered all of the questions during setup of server. Can log-in as root and as one user that I built during startup. How can I start a GUI so I can configure the rest of the O/S. Trying to learn Linux, Making the jump from Window Server 03 world. I appologize for being so new, trying to learn as fast as I can. Have played around with various distros, but not any server Linux. Any help would be a great help. Thanks.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Which version of ES are you trying? Have you considered trying CentOS 4.1? This is a clone of RHES 4, but free. If you select to install XServer and either Gnome or KDE or both during the installation, it'll startup to the GUI when you bootup. I suppose this will be the same in RHES, but maybe not with older versions.

If the GUI was installed on your system and it just doesn't startup, your system is booting into runlevel 3 (multiuser with networking), and not 5 (3 + GUI). You can start the GUI by entering either X or xstart in a terminal. If it starts OK and you want that to be automatic, just edit /etc/inittab. Change id:3:initdefault: to id:5:initdefault:
