just share the directories that you want users to access and then assign the permissions.  Otherwise you will have to reinstall the OS to 2000/2003 server.  In active directory, you wither participate or you do not.  Meaning, your servers can either respond to authetication requests or they are member servers.  Your machine is a client.  You need to give it a static IP and then share what you want to share.

WinXP has a limit of 10 concurrent connections... which might be a reason upgrade to Win2003.

"Promotion" is a poor choice of words... there is no upgrade path from WinXP to to Win2k3 Server.  It would require a complete reinstall

windows xp cannot be upgraded to a win2003 server .
windows xp is a workstation and can be only client for a win2000 and win2003 server .
