MAC OS X Locking Up

To begin with, I am like a fish out of water when it comes to a MAC. My Rabbi called with a MAC issue (I'm congregation's Web Developer so I must know about these things LOL) and I don't have a clue.

The Hardware is a Power Book G4

THE ISSUE: When connected to a DSL line, the entire OS locks up. He has to hard reboot the machine to do anything. This
Sometimes happens when not on a network but nowwhere near as often.

The issue happens when in OS X and 9.2

Can anyone give me a clue how to help him? I have no idea where to start. To me it sounds like a driver issue... even so... I don' t know where to start.

I passed on the info (I do apreciate your reply!). Hopefully he knows where the Application folder is... I'll let you know soon!
Another thing worth checking is if your hard drive is full.  Mac's have a tendency to lock up when their swap space starts to diminish.  It is doubtful though since you say it only happens when he connects to a dsl line.
Actually from what I understand... it happens more often on a DSL line. I does happen at other times. I am just unclear of the frequency. I'll be sure to ask him about the disk space though. Thanks for the tip... He has the message. Hopefully I will have a better idea tomorrow.
Another thing that may or may not be worth mentioning is that he said he took it to a MAC shop and they told him it was fine. Of course it never showed the simptoms while there!
Hi wanabegates,
First, I am not saying that this is what is happening, but it is a possibility.   When connected to the network at times things might try to connect and/or install at times.
Based on that is it possible that something is trying to install in the back ground (or even in the foreground).

Another possibility sometimes within the above, could the computer be going slow and only thinking at that particular time and is not really frozen, if you wait longer is it okay?  How long has he waited?

I am assuming that when this happens if it is really a hang, there is something else directly happening.   What programs are running at the time of this freeze?

Another possibility (doubtful though) is that some piece of hardware (computer, Modem, or router) might need a firmware update, so knowing all of the equiptment that is being used could help.

Thanks,
Steven Stuart
