domain invalid 550 5.7.1

I have added a domain on the exchange server and I get " 550 5.7.1  domain invalid "when trying to send an email to a user with an email address on the domain. I added the domain under the default recipient policy on the exchange 2000 server. I have other email  domains defined that work on this same exchange server.  I haven't added a domain for quite a few years, so maybe I am forgetting a step. I did restart the server as well.  Any help would be appreciated.

sorry if it is a silly question, but you have properly configured the DNS records for this domain right?

-red
pmathisAuthor Commented:
Yes, those are correct. I get an acceptance of postmaster address failure when doing a dns report at dnsreport.com, but my mail server does get connected to.
redseatechnologiesCommented:
alrighty,

so you have configured dns correctly for this domain,

if you are a bit rusty in adding multiple domains to a server, here is the micrososft KB article on it

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=268838

it is relatively straightforward, but have a look and see if you missed anything (or maybe do it again for the fun of it)

Ok, that is what I did, and I restarted the server, still didn't work, so I removed it and added it again. but it still doesn't work.
pmathisAuthor Commented:
Do you think that this might be the issue??

redseatechnologiesCommented:
if you go to http://www.zmailer.org/mxverify.html and enter the domain there to test

what kind of errors does it give you?

if you have followed all the steps, then we will have to try to figure it out from the errors

also, got anything showing up in the event logs?

-red
redseatechnologiesCommented:
that all depends on what the error is

you are getting a different error, so i doubt that it is the cause

try the zmailer link and post what it returns

-red
pmathisAuthor Commented:
What ? No ``postmaster'' supported there ? That violates RFC 2821 section 4.5.1.
redseatechnologiesCommented:
if that is the only error, then it looks like it connects (at the very least)

can you telnet to it from the inside and see what it says?

telnet yourserver 25
ehlo
mail from:disco@ourdomain.com
rcpt to:your@email.address.com
data
just work
.

and what is the line just above that "What? No "postmaster" supported here" comment

should be something like 550 7.x.x whatever

-red
pmathisAuthor Commented:
Yes I've telnetted and sent email and  and Internally it works, it always has
pmathisAuthor Commented:
Externally It doesn't work, but all the other domains do work off of the same External ip address
pmathisAuthor Commented:
here is the line above
550 5.7.1 Domain invalid
Eh ? What ? No ``postmaster'' supported there ? That violates RFC 2821 section 4.5.1.

redseatechnologiesCommented:
right, so let me make sure i understand you

you cant receive email on your newly added domain (which we will call) abc.com

if you telnet in locally and send mail to betty@abc.com, it works

from any external source, it bounces with a domain invalid error

are you running any spam filters at all???

i know spam assassin uses domain invalid as a bounceback

pmathisAuthor Commented:
gfi mail essentials but I added the new domain to it and stopped and restarted the service.
redseatechnologiesCommented:
i hoped so

i expect there is a setting in ME that you may have missed

are you using mailessentials with mail security?

are you using it as a relay (seperate to your mail server)?

i think we are getting close now!

-red
pmathisAuthor Commented:
I've looked through ME and I don't see anything other than what I've already added, I've also rebooted the server and it is doing the same thing.
redseatechnologiesCommented:
so,

are you using mailsecurity as well

and

is mailessentials running as a relay (ie., on a seperate machine)

-red
pmathisAuthor Commented:
Not using mailsecurity, we use scanmail from trendmicro, ME runs on the Exchange Server
redseatechnologiesCommented:
have you had a look at

http://support.gfi.com/manuals/en/me11/me11manual-1-07.html

to make sure you have added the domain correctly to ME?

also, what version of ME are you using?

-red
pmathisAuthor Commented:
Version 10, and I think I added it correctly, also I don't think it would stop mail from coming in if it wasn't configured, it would just not filter the spam.
redseatechnologiesCommented:
sorry, i gave you the incorrect link above

http://support.gfi.com/manuals/en/me11/me11manual-1-72.html

also, have you ensured that your server isnt blocking anything on the SMTP connector (if you are using it)

-red

redseatechnologiesCommented:
i think you are right about that pmathis, i think i am confused with mailsecurity (which will actually stop the mail)

-red
pmathisAuthor Commented:
OK it was actually a firewall issue, there was a configuration for the smtp protocol that had to be configured.

Thanks

For your assistance on this.
redseatechnologiesCommented:
at least you got it sorted

thanks
