Symantec Mail Security for Exchange (SMSMSE) 4.5 Service fails to load during system start-up on SBS 2003

Everytime we restart our SBS 2003 server we receive 'At least one service or driver failed during system startup' and on checking the System event log 2 events are listed;

Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange service to connect.

The Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

However when I attempt start the service manually it starts successfully and SMSMSE seems to function normally.

Also, I suspect that when the server is left like this i.e. Windows loaded but with the SMSMSE service not yet started, it causes a problem with e-mail's jamming in the Exchange 'messages pending submission' queue.

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Check out the engine. Here when I upgraded from exchange 2000 to exchange 2003, on every reboot the exchange services were down and I had to stop the symantec services just to start the exchange service. As of now we are using a new anti virus. Try checking the version compatibility.
Ours was 8

Was it version compatibility or is the issue solved. If so please do tell me the solution.

I DON'T think it's a compatibility problem as and the problem IS still present!

The server is running Small Business Server 2003 Basic - Windows Server 2003 = NO SP / SBS 2003 = NO SP / Exchange 2003 = SP1 / SMSMSE = V4.5

SMSMSE V4.5 minimum system requirements (as below) indicate that it should be compatible although I have noticed that they make no mention of Exchange 2003 SP1 (only Exchange 2003).

At present we know to start the SMSMSE service manually every time the server has restarted but this is inconvenient and also a security worry.

Any thoughts?
(Many thanks for you help).

Hopefully your issue is solved. But there have been many a comments with Symantec posing a lot of problems.Don't Know why.

To be more precise, If you have solved the problem please do tell me the solution.

Einy: Thanks for your help, the problem IS now resolved, basically I think the issue was down to very poor hard disk performance which was causing the system to take a long time to load, logon (or do anything in fact) and always with a massive amount of hard disk activity which was probably causing the service start to timeout during system startup but to successfully start when the system was less busy - we have cured this problem by cloning the original disk using Ghost to a new replacement disk.

P.S. I have heard some positive comments about GFI from a colleague recently and may well do some investigation into this product.
