How to get variable's text? - Should be easy

I have a form where a user can type in information. I need to save the data from the input text to another place.
In the program it is setup like this.. trace(_root.iDataEdit.vFName);

But all i get is this. How can i have it return just the MYDATATYPEDIN

Please help. I have also tried doing a _root.iDataEdit.vFName.text to get the data but it returns undefined.

Using Flash MX.
Thanks in advance.

if "vFName" it's not the textfield instance name, but the associated variable ("Var" field in the property inspector), then you should clear it (clear the Var field) and give it as the textfield instance name (Instance input field). Then you can get the raw text with:

I have set vFName to both the instance name and the var field name. Is that bad?
>Is that bad?

Yes, they should be different (and the "Var" property is deprecated, it's there only for backward compatibility with flash 5)

Still no luck. Tried with Var blank. Trace returns undefined.
