Can we have more info please? Like which raid controller are you using, how many disks, what brand and size, what server model etc...
GregDarbyCommented:
How many disks do you have? If you have RAID 5 one drive dropping shouldn't stop the Server from running. Sounds like more than 1 drive has dropped. Could be RADI controller problem or like i have seen in the past, a Power Supply problem.
agbor1960Author Commented:
actually is an application problem the application used about 45gigs within a few hours. Server is HP DL380 Disk 3+online spear (Smart Array 5i Controller) C drive is Raid 1 and the D drive is Raid 5
if you need more information please let me know.

Can you access the array if you boot into safe mode? have you tried turning off all apps that try accessing that array, and then try deleting things.
agbor1960Author Commented:
yes but no luck i can't delete anything on the drive, yes i have turned off all apps trying to access the array, BTW no apps can access because if full, one more thing if i add more disk to make 4 disk instead of 3
would that help? or if i removed one of the disk so that the online spear takes over,  would that free me up lets say 2MB?
GregDarbyCommented:
Wondering if you can boot up using the Windows 2000 Advanced Server floppies and go into the Recovery Console.
GregDarbyCommented:
As per my last post you can delete files from the Recovery Console.

See article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q229716/
rindiCommented:
Try the recovery console as Greg said. Adding a disk to the array will not help immediately, as you will first have to expand the array, and then you have to have access to the array in your OS so you can extend the partition using diskpart. One thing you can try as well is to run chkdsk /r /x, which should run when booting the system. chkdsk might be able to free up some space that may have been corrupted.

windows 2000 advanced server floppies did not work because of the array... i think because i did not install the array drivers

Tenks
GregDarbyCommented:
Correct. You will need to press the F6 and install them from a floppy. You should have these somewhere.
agbor1960Author Commented:
so if i try to build or add more disk to the array will it work?
rindiCommented:
It is first of all risky. Before manipulating your arrays you should allways make sure you have a good and working, tested backup. Have you tried running chkdsk?
agbor1960Author Commented:
yes no luck ran it with /r /x still no free disk space
rindiCommented:
If you boot into safe mode command prompt only, can you access the partition from the command line?
agbor1960Author Commented:
nope, i get the "There is not enough space on the disk" message
rindiCommented:
Try setting up a minimal parralel installation of windows on a separate HD, along with the smartarray driver. Then try booting to this new installation and try deleting unnecessary files on the raid 5 array.
agbor1960Author Commented:
i was able to extend the array on a test machine but windows can't recognize it, how can i make windows to recognize the added disk space?

thanks
rindiCommented:
Use diskpart, a utility that runs on the command prompt. It can extend arrays, but of course you have to be able to access it. By entering diskpart /? you get a list of options, and with the option and ? you get further help.
agbor1960Author Commented:
can i be able to use the diskpart from a different drive lets say the c drive? or must it me the drive that i want to expand? because on the drive there's no space

thanks
rindiCommented:
Diskpart is part of the OS, you just start it from the command prompt and then select the drive you want to extend.
agbor1960Author Commented:
great.. i will that let today and i will let you know..
agbor1960Author Commented:
i was able to extend the drive and make it dynamic, but now in windows explorer i don't see the drive anymore and in computer management i see the drive extended but no file system.

Thanks
rindiCommented:
Now would be a good time to have a working backup, as I mentioned earlier, as when manipulating partitions and disks, things can allways go wrong. Often such manipulations need some free space which you didn't have on your original system, this may have been the cause that you can't see anything. You can try the links below, software which may be able to recover data from your array. But again, using theseoncorrectly may make things worse. If the data is really important you should consult a recovery service (the first link is one such service).
