have a linux router/proxy but I cant download mail from a mail server on the internet using outlook express on client machines..
I can access internet from these clients though...
I am not running any firewall or iptables
what can I do..???

My guess is that you have set up Squid as a web proxy server. It can't proxy POP/IMAP/SMTP traffic and thus nodes on the inside can't directly access internet mail services. to fix this you have two choices. Either install an IPTables NAT'ing firewall on the router (assuming you only have one outside IP) and allow POP/IMAP/SMTP traffic, or install a mail proxy server (like Perdidition).
