Unprovoced system crash (XP on notebook)

My notebook, a hp nx7010, often locks itself (system crash). Everything just freezes. I just can't understand why (fresh windows installation, using newsest updates and recommended drivers).

Could you give suggestions why these things might happen. I understand that you can't solve the problem, but just give me some info... Is these unprovoked and unexplainable system crashes common? Can I demand a new computer from HP?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If its a new install, sounds like hardware. Could be memory, processor, or video display. Takes a lot of diagnosing to pinpoint the actual item causing the crash. Most efficient I know to do is use a burn in test. What that does is stresses your whole pc at about 75%. It will list what is causing errors. Sound is the most common, but usually because it isn't connected to any speakers. I use one at my shop a lot, and it is the best solution for pc's that are locking up if no viruses or obvious reasons are noticed. Hope this helps!
I'd run memtest86+ at least 5 times if no errors before that (http://memtest.org). Also blow out the vents with a can of compressed air.
