About:blank

Hi,
I have an about:blank along with a grayed out home page on IE. BUT I have run the MS new anti-spyware, hijack, reglite, CWS, and all of the anti-spyware programs and none of them find anything.. AND.. the about:blank only occurs when i use IE to browse sites on my hard drive. It does not appear when I browse online.  I have exhausted all the avenues I can find and it still (about:blank) appears when I open sites on my hard drive.  I have tried firefox with the same result.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Here is some more information:

File Description:

About:Buster is a program that is used to help clean up the CWS infection called Home Search Assistant. It should only be used if your hijackthis log has entries that look like res://random.dll/sp.html#2131 or something similar.

Usage Instructions:

Download AboutBuster 5.0 from the Download link.

Then unzip all files from the zip folder to a folder or your desktop. Start it by double-clicking on the aboutbuster.exe icon and then click on the Update button to check for new updates. If any updates exist, please install them. Exit AboutBuster and reboot into safe mode. Once in safe mode double-click on the aboutbuster.exe icon again and click on the Begin Removal button. When it has finished scanning you will see a message stating that the Scan Completed and you should press OK. When the next information window opens press the Exit button. Then finally press the OK button again when it tells you a log has been saved.

AdwareAway will take care of the About:blank hijacker:

http://www.adwareaway.com/aboutblank.htm

The trial version is fully functional for a few sessions.

For the home page, try this registry patch:

http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/UnlockHomePage.reg
Unlocks the grayed-out Home Page section on the General Tab

Download, right-click and select merge.

Reboot and test.

There's more than one version of "About:Blank" -
"About:Buster" deals with one version (and only one)
Not sure if "AdawareAway" can handle all of them - nice if it could!

Pleuse HijackThs for diagnosis:

www.hijackthis.de

Post the logfile to the same webpage for analysis.

Autoruns is also useful in working out whether or not something has latched on to your system that shouldn't have:

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html

Then try SpyBot to clean up the rest of the mess:

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

If any of these applications pick anything up, bear in mind you may need to disable System Restore AND run them again in SAFE MODE to ensure disinfection.

If this doesn't work, then at least we've elimnated 99.99% of what the problem may be...  :)

Just to throw our another option try Ewido.  It is a free trial application that is fully functional for the first two weeks, but retains most of its function after the fact.

It is available at www.ewido.com. and works against trojans, dialers, spyware, worms and page hijacks (over 160,000 of them out of the box!)

This application has worked on numerous occasions when Adaware, Spybot, CWShredder etc have failed for me.

Good Luck!

Hi,
EWIDO is awesome... I have run EVERYTHING and EWIDO found many items that the others had missed; AND at the bottom line IT WORKED where all the others failed.

Thank you!
