In McAfee managed virus scan, htmldlg.exe is taking up large amounts of processing time.
On multiple occasions, we've had user complaints that their computers are running slowly.  After going to task manager/processes, I'll click on the "CPU" column to sort it.  Htmldlg.exe will be in there, taking up varying amounts of processing time - upwards of 60% usually.  If I end process and reboot, the problem is solved for the time being.  The same thing happens with a file called upgdlg.exe.  Why is this happening, and what can I do?

Thank you very much,

Dave Lockwood

Oh well, what slows down pcs?
How strong are those machines (Ram, CPU) ? How much Ram is consumed by the above mentioned processes, how much is unused?
What are the hardware recommendations for managed virusscan?
Have you read the manual and can you change the scanning option like exclusions, file types, max. scanning time and so on?
Do such a scan on a test computer and observe.

Well, we have about 250 machines in our organization.  It's happening on a small % of them - maybe 10 (that we've heard of) out of 200+.  Also, it's happening on my machine as well - I have a PIV, 3 Ghz with 500 mg Ram.  So, that being said, I doubt the hardware or ram factors into the equation.  I'm continuing to research it, but I'm doubtful that that is at the root of the problem.  The only configurable options we have are to select what is being scanned, and to update it.  It's web based, run by McAfee.  ***We've found that on a couple of machines, a simple uninstall/reinstall will fix the problem.  But considering the fact that it's an intermittent problem, it's hard to claim that it's "fixed".  Even if the re-install is ultimately the fix, I'd like to know why it's happening in the first place.  I've searched on McAfee's site, but I've yet to find any reference to either htmldlg.exe or upgdlg.exe.  I'll keep pushin' and let you know if I find anything.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,

Where is the file located ?

Perform a search on your PC for the file, and then right click it and choose Properties.......

Post the information, both the owner and location and I'll have a look at it for you

Thanks
Simon

We've contacted McAfee, and they verified for us that the files I mentioned are related to their virus scan product.  Initially, they gave us a file called myciocleanup.exe, but this hasn't worked.  We're waiting to hear back from McAfee.  I'll post the updates here when I get them.

Thanks,
Dave

I get this problem too.  And the only solution is to reboot.  I think it happens at the rate of once per month on my machine.

The only thing that I can point to at this point is that I am connected via VPN to another server when I notice it.  I'm wondering if McAfee is trying to connect to the internet to get some info, and because the VPN connection is getting in the way of that, the HtmlDlg.exe starts to behave eratically.

thanks
Bruce Reid

I found this in the registry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\McAfee\ManagedServices\Agent\Subsystems\myScheduler\Configuration\Tasks\ASAP_0000000000000000]
"szTaskName"="ASAP_0000000000000000"
"dwScheduleType"=dword:00000002
"szStartDateTime"="2005/10/21 04:00:00"
"dwDayMask"=dword:0000007f
"szAppName"="HtmlDlg.exe -Hidden -Caption=\"ScheduledVirusScanTask\" -Url=\"myui://ScanNow.htm\" -ResDll=\"myScnUi.Eng\" -Param=\"CloseOnComplete,VT_BOOL,-1\" -Param=\"ScanObject,VT_BSTR,AllFixed\""
"fEnabled"=dword:00000001
"fRunIfMissed"=dword:00000001
"szScanItem"="AllFixed"

It looks like it runs at startup.  I deleted the key (ASAP_00000...) and rebooted and the problem went away until the next day.  I think McAfee is putting it in automatically if it doesn't exist.

Sorry it's been awhile since I've posted, but I don't have a whole lot to report.  Our network team (I work help desk support) had disabled the real time scanning feature in McAfee, which seems to have worked.  But obviously that's just a band-aid approach to the problem.  It is a work around for the time being, though.  I'll post if I have more..

Thanks,
Dave

good call!
I'm sure that's exactly it.  It's looking for network drives that are no longer there..(or worse, maybe it's finding them!)

That particular problem plagues me all the time even when I want to do something as siimple as change folders in "My Documents" listing.  The system stops and checks to see if anything is available on my P: drive, which I may have had connected to earlier in the day via VPN.  If the drive is no longer there, the system waits for some kind of timeout before it decides to stop looking.

In the case of the scan, I'm guessing that the scanner does in fact find my network drive and  proceeds to try and scan all 600 gb of it across the network!

I think the Exclusions tab will be the answer: exclude any non local drives.

thanks for the info SullivanJm

Bruce

Sullivanjm is 100% correct.  It's the scheduled on demand scan set on the policy in mcafeeasap.com, using Total Protection Service.  Mine was set to 5:30am daily.  My scan ran for over 5 hours because I have an almost full 250GB USB backup drive which was also being scanned.  Big slow down in the morning, set it to weekly at 5:30am saturday, problem solved.

Anti-virus software was originally developed to detect and remove computer viruses. However, with the proliferation of other kinds of malware, antivirus software started to provide protection from other computer threats. In particular, modern antivirus software can protect from malicious browser helper objects (BHOs), browser hijackers, ransomware, keyloggers, backdoors, rootkits, trojan horses, worms, malicious layered service providers (LSPs), dialers, fraud tools, adware and spyware. Some products also include protection from other computer threats, such as infected and malicious URLs, spam, scam and phishing attacks, online identity theft (privacy), online banking attacks, social engineering techniques, Advanced Persistent Threat (APT), botnets and DDoS attacks.
