Crystal Reports Engine Error# 723 Failed to retrieve data from the database.

My complete error:
Crystal Reports Engine Error# 723 Failed to retrieve data from the database.
Details:Database vendor code -142
Execute <pestartprintjob>

Using Crystal 11
Sybase SQLanywhere 9
written in delphi

The program I use allows the end users to make reports and add them to the program.  I can add this report to my program and run it from a drop down window for a group of Doctors Orders.  When it runs it retrieves nothing, but it runs.  When I limit the browser window to just one item, the item I would like to run the report for, I get the error above.

Can any of you experts help me here?  500 pts.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Sounds like a permissions problem with the database or the directories on the server.

That is what I was thinking, but I didn't know where to start.
Server: Windows 2003 Enterprise
Workstations: XP Professional
Just looking at the SQLAnywhere description for error code 142, I'd guess that there's a problem with how the report is set up.  Can you run this report independantly with the same criteria and get a successful result?

Yes.  From crystal I clicked on the preview screen and it displays the name of the report, and under that a list of possible people (documents to apply this report to).

Now I can click on each of these and my preview screen changes.

The database itself has several company possibilities.
C01 being the default for the programmers, sort of a test company.
All reports are written in C01, and whichever company you go to (C02 or C04) the reports run as the root is somehow substituted.
The report I am trying to run actually came from the Vendor, I sent it to them, they corrected some inner joins, but returned it to me corrected and running on their end.

So that is where I am stumped.

When you open the report in the Crystal designer, if you try to verify the database what happens

Response, : The database is up to date.
Is it possible that you're seeing this error when you select a person that isn't in the database?  I've seen this type of error when the source for a report is a stored procedure and the stored procedure doesn't return any data.  This could mean that the person you selected isn't in the database (at least not with whatever other restrictions are on the report) or it could mean that the parameters you're choosing from are set up incorrectly.

Do you have access to the data underlying the report so you can check some of this out?

Thanks for the direction mlmcc

The problem was duplicitius ip addresses being assigned by the servers secondary nic card.

When the ip addresses were resolved the report worked.
Interesting.  I don't know how we would have gotten to that from the reports not working.
