Windows Update folders in root of C: drive
I have several computers on my network that have weird folders on the root of their C: drive. The folders are similar looking to folders created in c:\windows\system32\CatRoot or CatRoot2 when Microsoft updates are run. Has anyone seen this before?

Here's an example of a few of the directories

02/14/2005 08:39 AM <DIR> 072badc02e53439098d2f2fe8a9af43b
03/07/2005 07:48 PM <DIR> 0f5f5d869ab0ec592faab1e929b7c394
04/07/2005 07:31 AM <DIR> 1d7d2f50f2d9fed598604ce42c6c
07/15/2005 02:11 PM <DIR> 27e93c5809c9a7d0f3445e92c2ee441e
07/09/2005 10:06 AM <DIR> 3b3845d6384fa3e9d806a769
06/06/2005 07:27 AM <DIR> 45eaab4dbb2ab17d24b56688ca6f
06/23/2005 08:08 AM <DIR> e4114be08ccffe240200adfde7
03/08/2005 07:16 PM <DIR> e9121264c4807121b7f7
05/19/2005 04:29 PM <DIR> ffbde5fbcbd5ca61b3cd8f250dffcf2a

within those directories are:
05/19/2005 04:29 PM <DIR> .
05/19/2005 04:29 PM <DIR> ..
05/19/2005 04:28 PM <DIR> sp1qfe
05/19/2005 04:28 PM <DIR> sp2gdr
05/19/2005 04:28 PM <DIR> sp2qfe
10/14/2004 01:34 PM 7,168 spmsg.dll
10/14/2004 01:36 PM 169,984 spuninst.exe
05/19/2005 04:28 PM <DIR> update

Only with different file dates in each directory.

I don't know where to start with this one, so any thoughts would be great. All are XP computers.

One note: make sure the SP and updates are actually listed in the add/remove programs list.

The folders are created by windows updates and are only used to store the files that are downloaded until they have patched your system. The drive may change from time to time if you have more then one local drive (it uses the dive with the most available space).

Have never tried it, but you can give "Disk Cleanup" tool a go to see if that will clean it up for you.

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
