Folders always revert back to read-only
Ive got an XP machine that Im using to share a drive. However, even though Im logged on as the local administrator, Im unable to make any shared folders accessible beyond read-only. If I un-check the "Read-only" box and then hit OK, and then go back to it, its read-only again. What am I missing?
now that i re-read your question, also consider inherited permissions... if c:\music is "read only" and wont change, it may be inheriting it from the next level up, C:\...
right-click c:\music (for example), security tab, set permissions as you want, then go to the "advanced" button and uncheck the option that tells it to inherit from parent.

Hi soBC,
If you have a look at the Read-Only check box it may be filled with a green square rather than a tick. If it is the green square its more than likley the folder isn't Read-Only allow it would appear so, this seems to be a bug in XP. If on the other hand the Read-Only check box has a tick in it then yes you have a problem lol
Don't know if that helps you any :o)

Unfortunately, Im still seeing folders as read-only. I tried the suggestions above, but any changes I make just seem to disappear. Changing the permissions on the folder also has no effect...

for example, if your C drive is shared as "C" with full access, but the folder c:\music has SECURITY PERMISSIONS set to "read only", then you'll only have read only.
MS takes the most-restrictive permissions and uses them.
use right-click > sharing and security. check the "permissions" button on "sharing" tab, and check "security" tab for whatever you need to adjust...
