I get Acces denied when i try to download a files! plz help! Very urgent!

Hi i have a (at least for me) a very urgent issue - when i try to download files i get this message:

Forbidden
Access to the location: http://www.someone.com/someapp.exe

...has been denied for the following reason:

Policy prevents this page to be accessed

This is on a 2003 server(enterprise).
I also have this problem on a Windws Xp machine that runs a dns server.

have the machines been hacked - to prevent them reaching ms update?

How do i reverse this process?

The 2003 server is a clean install - I just installed MCafeeVirus scan 8.01 yeasterday (which i dowloaded from mcafee site with  the 2003 machine.)

And Simple dns 4.0 is installed - nothing else.

Help plz - how can i set back the permissions to normal?

Thanx in advance for your support in this matter!

OK, in server 2003 internet explorer is just a little too secured...  try this:

1. add that site to your trusted list, if you trust it.

OR

in IE, Tools > internet options > security > internet > default > (then) customize.

scroll down for "downloads" and look for the section below it called "file download" and put the dot by Enable.

Hi thanx for the answer!

Nope! already done that! - same thing with the XP SP2 machine.

the 2003 machine is with SP1.

And if i change the setting or not - the is no change - nothing happens!

I still get forbidden acces!

Any idea how beat this one?
I forgot to tell you guys that i have also installed Firefox on the 2003 sp1 machine. And in firefox I also get forbidden access!

Both machines have sotfware firewalls installed + there is a enterprise firewall protecting the network..
i presume your network firewall is blocking exe files from being downloaded from the internet...

see if you can log in to the site offering the file, but log in securely... that might help it get through.

else, this might piss off your network admin if it works for you, but go thru a proxy server to get out, around his firewall (if possible)...

in firefox:  tools > options > connection settings > manually configured, set the http proxy host to 200.84.64.155  and the port to 8080.

try the download, hope it works... but if it doesnt, you can either keep trying other proxy servers on other ports that wont trip the firewall, or get it somewhere else and invest in a usb thumb drive?
Not really - i downloaded the Mcafee firewall from Mcafee.com yesterday from their website without no problem...  And that was from the 2003 machine!

Plus i dowloaded some ohter files to without this problem!

So there must be something else..
perhaps the sites you are trying to download from are in your "restricted zone" ?  tools > internet options > security > restricted zones > sites.

maybe they are in the restricted zone of the corp firewall that you cant control?
well i have access to the corp. firewall - its not in the restricted zone - the funny thing is that i can download the files form lan without a problem - but the servers that are in the DMZ get Forbidden access. And as i said the yeasterday i downloaded some files to the/with the 2003 server without any problem! And the issue is also sincce we get forbidden access - the ms update in failing when trying to download the files/patches.

So there must be something else.

Your suggestion with the proxy work though - but that is only a workaround - thats not a real solution to the problem.

I have been seaching for the problem for quite some while now - but i can not find a restriction anywhere - not even in the Corp. firewall - the rules are hard, yes of course on that one - but it doesn't restrict this. (downloading files - for example  ms updates )
i suppose you can get a good packet sniffer (ethereal, or tdi packetmon, both from sourceforge.net) and maybe see what is blocking you...

if the proxy worked, then you bypassed the firewalls and all was well... leads me to believe it is the firewall...

remember that different firewalls can do different things... for example, allow mcafee but disallow somefile.exe...

But how come i can download form the LAN network then? How is it possibale?
+ how is it possibale that i could download from the  server yesterday - but today... it doesn't work?
like in internet explorer, tools, internet options, connections, LAN settings... that checkbox there "bypass proxy server for lan hosts"... their firewall probably has a setting that says 'trust all hosts on this ip range'.

therefore, you can install a simple proxy server on one of your lan workstations, and proxy off that from the win2k server, thru the workstation, to the internet and back....  but you are right, that isnt a full time fix.

without knowing more about the corp firewall, and or corp proxy server ( microsoft proxy client, for example, grabs your routing table by the neck and drags it thru the corp proxy server, harder to get around), it's hard to say what you must do to get around it.

your internet settings, thru the course of conversation, appear to be letting you download files... but something still prevents you...  its got to be either a local antivirus/antispyware on your machine, or a corp firewall/proxy...
