how to use voice over ip from a protected network

Hi all,

I m working i an office where we get access to the internet through a proxy. using any net to phone calls do not work ordinarily from any pc as i think it is blocked from the proxy. I am wondering if there is any way to make a call using any "net to phone call service" from such a protected network without requesting it to enable it from the proxy server.

Your valuable suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Hi grblades

thank you very much for your comment. i tried to use firefly but while trying to connect it gives a connection error as:

"An error has occured while trying to connect to the firefly network. Do you want to attempt to reconnect?  "

which I believe is due to being blocked from the proxy. even i disabled the local firewall still i am getting the same error. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks and regards,

You cannot use a proxy for this. You need to permit the traffic (UDP port 4569) on the firewall between your network and the Internet.

well i m having access to the internet only through a proxy server. on my workstation i enabled the udp port 4569 by using "nesh firewall set portopening UDP 4569 enable" but what if this port is blocked somewhere in the way to the internet.
Yes there will be a firewall configured somewhere between the internet and the company network (possible the proxy server itself). Unless you can open the port on this firewall you wont be able to get it to work.

hi grblades
thanks very much.
how can i enable this port without asking? i think it is not possible. though my problem is still unsolved but your comments have been quiet informative. I will accept your comments as a solution.
There is no way you can open the port without asking as that is the whole point of having a firewall.

If you have SSH access permitted then in theory you could have a machine on the Internet somewhere and make a SSH connection to it and send the VoIP traffic through the tunnel.
It is unlikly you will have this though as it is normal only to permit the IT staff this sort of access.
