service account
can anyone explain to me what is a service account and how it works?
thanks
thanks
A service account - as far as I know - is just an account to maintain a given service or set of services. Some programs, especially that run as services, require administrative privilages. So you would create a plain old user account, give it "log on as service" permissions, and likely stick it in the "Administrator" or possibly domain administrator group and there - it's a service account.

You were/are being vague in your context - service account - in Windows is what I described it as. A service account in linux, solaris, or with a business could be different. I could have a service account with IBM.

as usual the whole situation wasn't presented in the question, which makes it kind of hard to answer it.

There is no "service" account for a w2k server. There are service accounts for Services (Windows 2000 Server is, possibly best described as "a collection of services". You might say the server and DC service account is SYSTEM. If you want to see what account is handling a service, look in the Services part of Computer management.

could you give me the default name of the service account for sql server?
