Laptop with XP Pro will not connect to domain

We have two laptops running XP Pro that I connected to our LAN domain (Windows 2000 SP3). Things seemed OK until the other week and user is unable to connect to the LAN or Internet.  I don't see any recent changes that might account for it like service packs and program updates.

When I attempt to login I get an error message that says the domain controller is either down or unavailable.

I have managed to actually log in by putting an address in the Primary DNS setting in the connection. It will then login and I can work on the LAN.  HOWEVER, I cannot get out to the Internet.

I think this has to do with our server running WINS Server.

The other computers (which are Win2000) show that the Primary WINS Server address is 192.168.1.6 and one of the DNS Servers is 192.168.1.6 (the other is 24.158.96.10) The Gateway is 192.168.1.1 and so is the DHCP--- this is correct (the address of our WatchGuard Internet Router connected to T1.

Is there an incompatability with XP or do I have to do something about the Wins Server?

Help- I don't even know what to look at right now.
