Moving Exchange 2000 Data to Exchange 2003 Server

I currently have two servers. One is an exchange 2000 server and the other is a trial version of 2003. I have to rebuild the exchange 2000 box with 2003. I have moved all the mailboxes to the trial server, rehomed all the public folders, made the trial server the master server and setup the internet connectors on it. i followed the microsoft article(Q307917) on how to do this. However when i took the original server offline to test the trial server it would not send mail and only received mail hapharazdly. I am very confused as to why the new server did not take over. Has anyone any suggestions? 500 points up for grabs....

Did you redirect your SMTP traffic on the firewall?
Do you have any SMTP Connectors on the existing server? Have you rehomed them?

hi Simon,

I redirected the smtp filter on surfcontrol and rehomed the connectors on the new server, but when i try and send mail with only the new server on, mail refuses to go. it seems like the old exchange server is required even if i have rehomed everything???
Shouldn't be, unless the old server is being used as a smart host.

If you look at the queues on the new server, what is the name of the queue that all the messages are sat in?
It should be something like domain1.com, domain2.com etc. If it is oldserver.yourdomain.com then the messages are trying to leave via the old server.

Simon.
I had changed the smart host to the new server and the new smart host was showing up in the queue correctly but didn't seem to send/receive mails
A smart host shouldn't be pointed at itself.
It should be pointing at another server. The smart host is a server that you are looking to send email through.
If you don't need to send email via your ISP, try removing it, see what happens then.

Simon.
Sorry, i misunderstood you, i pointed the smarthost ip at our surfcontrol box for outgoing, i then changed the config on surfcontrol to point to the new exchange server using port 25 for incoming.
If all the messages are in the SMTP Connector queue then I would look at the surf control device as being the culprit. Perhaps you have to tell it to allow email from the new IP address?

Simon.
Hi Simon,

As i said in my last post, i did set that up on surfcontrol to allow incoming/outgoing mail. Thanks.
