Retriving Files from a Dysfunctional Hard drive

Ladies/Gentlemen,

My hard drive ceased functioning; I installed a new hard drive w/ a Windows X P opsys and installed the dysfunctional hard drive as a slave w/ the intent of retrieving files. My PC does not see the slave hard drive. Can you recommend a solution to obtain the required files on the slave hard drive? Thank you and have an excellent day!

Very Respectfully

If that hard disk not shown on BIOS  then deficult to find a soluation,
but u can do one thing,
If u can find another same model hard disk, replace Hard disk controler to defect one and check it.
connect defect hard disk as Secondry IDE Master.

is there some kind of echo at this thread ?!

see this is not very standard way ,but sometimes can help,if you have a vacuum plastic bags/for vegatables, meat on so on/,put the hdd in such bag and get it vacuumpacked, then put the hdd for abot 24h in the freezer, the most impoirtaint thing is that the harddrive could not get any moisture/air moisture.

Can you hear the motor of the disk spinning? Have you made sure the jumpers are set correctly for slave, or have you tried attaching it to the other IDE channel (where the CD is connected. To be sure, disconnect the CD so you don't get any conflicts).
Nice soluation from   mwnnj   , but before heating defect hard disk needed to backup  data,   best system for  clone a defect  hard disk (  use Norton ghost)
