Slow outbound SMTP connector in Exchange 2003

Hi

I have just migrated to Exchange 2003 from 5.5 and all is ok apart from a problem where outbound mail sits in the smtp connector queue for about 20 minutes before being delivered.
Exchange 2003 is configured to use a smart host, who are a an external company doing AV scanning on all our email.
I can telnet to the external smtp server and they also host our MX record.

The internal network has primary and secondary DNS servers with forwarders configured.

Please help.

jmitchell2005:

There is a "connection time" that can be set on an SMTP connector.  Can you confirm that the option chosen is "Always Run" and that a custom connection time has not be enabled.  On a different note...did you defin the smart host on the Default SMTP Virtual Server?

Yes, Smart Host configured on "Default SMTP Virtual Server" is a problem sometime. We need "Smart Host" Setup on SMTP Connector.

What's Connector's property ... Like
Extended SMTP Verbs are available?

How good/consistent is the connection with your ISP?

Thanks Zoo and Maharajkp, but i sort of resolved that problem.  The Exchange server has got two nics that are teamed and are going into seperate switches. I un-teamed the nics and decided just to use one nic and this seems to have done the trick. Outbound email was flying out.
That is for about 5 hours, then the outgoing email started to queue again and the exchange traffic started to crawl. I downloaded Quests spotlight for exchange freeware so i could graphically see what is happening and the traffic to the information store is crawling. I an going to re-arrange the configuration of the exchange box because i done a stupid thing of having the databases and the transaction logs in the same partition. Also the network traffic has increased since the new exchange 2003 box was installed.

Are there any services on the box which is causing all this traffice in windows? The network is typically windows 2000 with the exchange box being 2003.

Cheers

JM
