USB Drive letter problem

I guess that this is a common problem, you stick a USB memory key into your XP box (Pro SP2) and it mapps it to an already used letter, so you go into disk administrator and correct it. But you have to assign each key to a different letter or XP doesn't recognise a previous key and messes it up again.

My specific problem is that I have 400 users, many of whom are using memory keys for work and I just don't have the time to map them all.

Is there a fix for this bug? One that allows XP to look at all it's drives, both local and network, then assign a truely free drive to the USB device?

Help much appreciated as I'm fed up of this.
