I need to temporarily stop my form from updating on screen.

I am developing a multimedia authoring tool and am currently working on transition effects. For this I have to capture an image of the form, then clear its controls and load in the controls for the next 'page' of the project. Then I get an image of these controls, finally I show a panel over the top of everything and draw the transition effect onto it using the two images.

Unfortunately doing this stops the transition effect from starting instantly and looking smooth, instead it kinda flickers. I have uploaded an example of this to http://www.burtonsoftware.co.uk/Downloads/transitions.exe

I need a way to stop the form from updating on screen until the transition starts, so that it can appear smoothly.
