Server for auto virus signature and windows update
I have set up a private network.
What is the approach to set up a FTP server in Windows 2003 that serves for auto virus signature update to the PCs within my network?
And what is the approach and operation of a patch server to do windows live update?

What do you mean by tricked to run on xp? Is it difficult to set up? I've looked up something called Windows SMS. Which one, WSUS or SMS, is better and easier to install and manage? And where can I find the updates to put to the server as a source for other PCs to update from?

You got the keywords in your hands: wsus (free) and autoupdate architect. Why go for sms (high cost) for private use?

It is a private network in the company. Is it suitable for using wsus? There are around 20 PCs to be updated windows patch from the server.
And for the auto virus signature of McAfee, I've configured a ftp server and set McAfee to update from this ftp server. But it says some files are missed or the repository is not valid. So what are the essential files to be put on the server?

For Microsoft update, there is wsus (can be tricked to run on xp as well) - well documented and free, can be set up by anyone.
For virusscanners, there are several products that make the task easy and fully automatic. I use McAfee Virusscan 8 Enterprise, the update component is called Autoupdate Architect.
Do a search on the internet and you will find plenty of information.
