Windows 2000 internet DNS problem, can't browse

hi!

i'm using Windows 2000 SP4, i have this problem on browsing the internet using internet explorer 6:

i cannot open any website getting only 'the page cannot be displayed' page. i can ping any IP address on the internet but would get an 'unknown host' error when i ping using the domain name not the IP address.

i know this is a DNS problem, since i can ping IP addresses but not the domain name. i've tried every solution i knew but still no success.

PLEASE HELP!

thank you very much.

Sounds more like a winsock issue or spyware.

Here's a few links to help you out.

First download the winsock fix to repair your internet problem.
Then test it.
Use this program to fix any winsock problems( it says its for xp but it works for 2000 as well)

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Below links are Spyware downloads where if your internet explorer still not working after the fix, then download and install the antispyware programs to clean out your computer..

http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
http://spybot.safer-networking.de/en/download/index.html
http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10379544.html?tag=lst-4-1

ohh..be sure to update your anti virus too.

After you've done that...

Do 2 restarts and call me in the morning.

Hope i helped!

No. This is not a DNS problem but Winsock. The underlaying protocols built-in TCP/IP Stack (ARP-RARP) are not working.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. In Registry Editor, locate the following keys, right-click each key, and then click Delete:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
4. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Note Restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys. Doing so causes the Windows OS to create new shell entries for those two keys. If you do not restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys, the next step does not work correctly.

Step 2: Install TCP/IP

1. Right-click the network connection, and then click Properties.
2. Click Install.
3. Click Protocol, and then click Add.
4. Click Have Disk.
5. Type C:\Windows\inf, and then click OK.
6. On the list of available protocols, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.
7. Restart the computer.
