Unable to start RAS on Win2000 server
Hi,
I am unable to start RAS on my Win2000 server. The error is "The routing and remote access service terminated with service-specific error 16389. Tried the solution at "http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;840686&FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH" but it did not work. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Onur.

When i was able to restart the RAS service on a 2000 server, I opened the RRAS snap-in and totally disabled RRAS on the server listed in the snap-in, then I re-enabled and re-configured it, and it worked fine after that.
"Routing and remote access service” depend on other services, Specially RPC service ( U can see under administrative tool > services) . Check weather RPC service start or not,
if it not start check ur system for virus and update Microsoft security patches.

Hi,
All services seem to be working fine. Something I recently noticed that, although SP4 is installed on the server, when I check, My Computer->Properties, it is not shown on the build number. Should I try another go with SP4, i think the system will not open after that.
Thank you.

Hi again,
Its unbelievable that there is no solution for this, except try-and-see. I really dont want to loose the server.
Guess I have no chance.
Thank you.

Heres why it works. MDAC replaces some of the core components in windows. One of these is causing your problem.
you can get MDAC here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9ad000f2-cae7-493d-b0f3-ae36c570ade8&displaylang=en
Worst thing that could happen is that you will be updating your system.
Good luck
