Converting VHS/Video tape to digital formats????
Hi all,
I need to convert some VHS video tapes to digital format so that I can display them on a website.
Could someone please give me some advice on what equipment, Video Capture Cards, cables or software I will need to purchase.
I am on a AMD 1000 800mb RAM, USB 2.0 and I also have a sony Cel900 laptop which has a firewire port, which I believe could be utilised.
Any help would be very much appreciated,

simplicitytheory,
Hi. I've personally connected a regular VHS player to the box and output to AVI (or MGEP...can't remember which). I've also connected a video camera to it and converted to digital. I've never gone the other way. BUT, if you click on the closeup of the box, I'll explain it to you:
http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Home+Video/Studio+Family/Studio+MovieBox+DV+version+9.htm
Looking at the icons, you'll notice the same ones are on both sides. One side is input and the other side is output. So, you can input and output to quite a few types. Scroll down here and you'll see the input/outputs it can handle listed for you:
http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Home+Video/Studio+Family/Studio+MovieBox+DV+version+9+Documents/Features+_+Specifications
Hope this helps.
Cheers!

[EDIT] MGEP = MPEG (don't want to look like a complete idiot because of a typo)

Thanks man, Im from Australia, now just trying to find a good price. Have you ever used a green screen, chroma key with this setup?
simplicitytheory,
Must be late/early there (smile).
Only place I've ever used chroma key (green screen) is with my own lights and backdrop and DSLR. I've read some articles on green/blue screening in video (masking, etc.) but it's a bit above me and probably something I'll not be doing. So, honestly, I'm not sure of the ability of this software to handle something like that. I have Pinnacle 8 (my job hasn't forked over the money for an upgrade) so I'm not sure if the newer version addresses it or not.
They also have some more professional products (and prices to match).
Unless there is some compelling reason for urgency, I'd contact them and ask specific questions about capabilities. Though the product is a fairly good price, it's a waste if it doesn't do all you need it to do.
Sorry I have no experience in that area to offer.

simplicitytheory,
Thanks. Hope to see some examples sometime. Video is an interesting business. I'm envious of those people who put together annimation and can do video special effects and editing.
Best to you,

I have a client that just needs some video converted this week, and reconverted and streamed from the web from a flash player, but in the future I would like to get into some corporate video production, thought I would try and get my hands on a package that would let me do both, which looks like the package you have suggested will, which is gold.
I've used video output from Pinnacle in Flash (actually, SWISH...a product from your country, I believe *wink*) and PowerPoint. And, of course, in AVI MPEG mode. Pinnacle is capable of making DVD menus, too, which I've never tried but it was an unexpected bonus.
Amazon shows it for 169.99 USD. Not sure what you will be able to fetch it for.

Hi again guys, just wondering using this video capture card, is it able to convert protected VHS tapes? Does protection become any sort of issue?
Again any help is much apprecaited.
