Incorrect Disk Space Reporting.

I am working on a Windows 2000 SP4 OS.

The system has a 74 GB Hard disk. In the storage section of the Computer Management the disk management shows the Hard disk as 74 GB Healthy NTFS system.

What is baffling me is that even though i have only 26 GB of data the system shows free space as 15 GB which means the total available space is only 41 GB.  According to me is should show around 48 GB space.

In the My computer screen the total disk space is shown as 74GB and the free space as 15 GB.

In the folder options i have clicked on the Radio button show all files so i guess there is no way that there are hidden files that are not being shown..

Just for some information i did have a installation of virtual machine on this machine at one point in time. Wonder if that has cause that issue .That istallation no longer exeits now.

If any of guys has faced this issue or know how to fix this pl. let me know.

Thanking you in Advance.

I would scan for hidden files, possibly stored by hackers. The best way is to run Rootkitrevealer from: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/RootkitRevealer.html

Be sure to save the results to a file so you can compare later.

Thanks  r-k and ppfoong,

I used diruse from Microsoft and it showed me the hidden files.

As i suspected earlier the it was the virtual machine files that were taking up space.

I think suggestion from r-k would have worked too but i used diruse first as it was from Microsoft.

Thanks r-k though. i will try out the tool you have suggested later.Looks like something useful.
