Office 2004 for Mac "There has been a network or file permission error. The network connection may be lost."

Every time a user opens and works on a Word doc from the server he gets the above error; He's running OS 10.4 on an iMac G5.  None of our other users are having this issue. After he gets the error, if he clicks "OK" Word then prompts the user with the "Save as:" dialog box. If "Cancel" is selected Word repeats the same error message and then allows him to successfully cancel the save upon clicking "OK" again.  Can anyone help?

There is a Tiger update for Office available at:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx

This seems to solve most problems for office on Tiger.

I'll check back later to see if it worked

Good luck!

Finally got to download the patch, still getting the same error.  I'm increasing points -- any ideas?
On the computer itself:( Highlight the program folder and go to Get Info>Ownership and permissions> Details and see if the permissions are set up to allow them to read/write( if not this is probably the problem). Then check the server for the same thing.

Just to let you know:

Apparently, "according" to Microsoft the only way to fix the Tiger problem is to upgrade to Office X or downgrade the Mac OS to Panther 10.3.9( which won't work since it's a G5), however, I feel there is probably a way since they probably just want to sell software, I'm still working on a solution for you but as yet have found nothing to help you.

If the above is not the problem:
What might help is to know what type of server is being used, Mac or Windows? What software is running it? Ethernet, wireless, firewire, and if the keyboard or mouse is bluetooth wireless there is a Tiger firmware update at:

http://www.apple.com/support/bluetooth/

in the right hand column halfway down the page under software updates.

and just in case they haven't done it yet, there is a Tiger update( 10.4.2) too! Just update through
Software update.

http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/

in the right hand column halfway down the page under software updates.
CAUTION!!!!! deselect the NEW SAFARI update as it has some weird bugs in it!

Hope this helps somehow!
cool, I'll try each one of these and let you know--
I checked the permissions and they weren't set to read/write, so I set them, but the error still appears.  I've applied all updates through software update.  We are using a dual Xeon-processor Dell PowerEdge 2600 as a file server for the Macs.  The permissions on the server were correct.  We are a running an Ethernet network -- the keyboard/mouse is the standard wired peripherals that comes w/ the iMac.

I reinstalled Office 2004 and reapplied all updates and so far the error hasn't reappeared. I do believe it was a permissions related error, so thank you for pointing me in that direction.  If the error returns, I'll check the 'Windows Sharing Check' as you instructed, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we got it this time! Thanks GrnPhoenix
I see this correspondence is from 2005.

I am now experiencing this issue, I reinstalled office and still received the same error message.

How did you over come this?
The error reappeared shortly thereafter.  It happens to all users now.  Now I just have my users save the files to their desktop, work on them there, then save over the file on the server.
this is a much better answer:

http://www.makemacwork.com/office-2004-wont-save-to-server.htm

also true for office 2007

and it actually works
