The way user accounts are listed in Active Directory

I am looking at my company's AD, specifically the list of users, and in the Name column some user accounts are listed by the AD username, like johnsmith, some are by the user account's display name - Smith, John (Accounts Payable)  -- [that is the format that we use for AD user account display names]
When I open up those accounts, they are identical in every way, yet they are listed differently. They also show up like that in Access Control Lists on various objects -- the users that are listed in AD as alias, only the alias shows, the ones that are listed by their display name, the display name shows.
Does that depend on how the account was created -- dsadd versus GUI AD, and in either case, how can we make all accounts display uniformly?
