Can you mix hardware providers when using NAS (Network Attached Storage)? Can a server from one company use NAS hardware from another company?

NAS is a new technology for me.  However, since I am the defacto Oracle DBA at my company, I have been asked to help build the new database server with storage.  Oracle allows for their databases to make use of NAS.  I have been trying to find cost effective database servers that can make use of NAS.  Currently I like the servers from Sun (running x86 architecture) for the database servers and I like HP for the price of some of their NAS solutions.  If the both support the same operating systems, file systems, and networking protocols, can I mix HP and Sun?  I realize there are many details involved, so I am not looking for an answer that states these two vendors will definately be compatible, but in a general sense.  Generally can servers from one manufacturer make use of Network Attached storage from another vendor if they support the same operating systems, file systems, and networking protocols?
