maximum files per folder on NTFS file system

Hi folks:

I am working on a virus scan project which often decompresses a couple hunderd thousands files in a folder say
240,000 files in a folder and then once the decompression is done scanning starts. The problem is that
decompression takes quite some time spanning over 48 hours + because of this ridiculous number of files per folder.

I have tried disabling 8DOT3 namning convention but no help from that.

Is there any limit on the number of files per folder assuming NTFS XP and NTFS WIN2K3

thanks in advance.

Files per volume 4,294,967,295 (232 minus 1 file)

I think the number above is for files per volume and not the folder. Moreover, what I have noticed is that for the first 30,000 files the graph of file count vs time  goes linear and then it goes exponential, so I am sure that it has to be the number well around this range.
