Got a fairly standard table bound to an xml data island

<table id="maintable" datasrc="#xmlsource">
<tr>
<td><img src="images/s.gif"/></td>
<td><div datafld="somefield"/></td>
</tr>
</table>

Problem is that, if there are 200 rows in the XML, the img element, when running off a web server, takes ages to come down - about 10 per second, so 20 seconds for the whole page to load which is painfully slow.

Seems that IE doesn't cache images in quite the way it should. The pages at asp page level are expire content immediately but the images directory has expire turned off.

Can you think of any ways of getting the img to load faster ?

Some thoughts I had
- set src through javascript
- use a technique to load the img through base64 text instead of src=
