Difficult Javascript, understand how maps scale

Below is Javascript from google map site, which has directional arrows and sliding map scale.
I notice maps only scale to certain values, but looking at javascript, which is very complex
I cant see how maps scale on submit of different position on slider, which is all done by javascript.

Below is very difficult code, many advanced features, please only reply if you understand how it works.
Not interested in obvious stuff like browser detect and active X and document writes, just in how maps work.
I can find nothing to scale maps, note coordinates lower in javascript code, also complex construct in save_history.

You forgive if code not perfectly formatted, it all come in one long line, took hours to format for you to read it.
This code not for faint heart, also why all code enclosed by //<![CDATA[, is this just XML terminology.
Many questions here to understand complex constructs near end main javascript in <HEAD>.
Appreciate help understanding methods used to display maps, and why scaling is granular, not even slider.
