Cannot Install SQL Server 2000 SP3

Hi,

I am currently attempting to install SP3 for SQL Server 2000 SP2 but it fails when it attempts to validate the user (SQL or Windows authentication). Despite having the correct credentials it will claims it cannot validate the password for the user. Has anyone else seen this before or have a work around for this?

Thanks.

1.Please clarify what is Sql server edition ; same for windows - OS, edition, SP..?
2. Make sure you can login, for example on the sql server query analyzer with the sql server login name\password
and check what sql server role you have - must be SysAdmin role
3. Sometimes - restart helps too (in case - there was some  SW installation and server has been never restarted since, etc.)

Eugene thank you for your reply.

SQL Server 2000 SP2 Standard Edition running on Windows 2000 Server SP4
I have verified that I can indeed login with the sa username and password via the query analyzer. I have the sysadm role with my sa user.
The server has been rebooted but the same behaviour presists.

If you need any more info please just ask.

Thank you.
sp3 or sp3a?

Eugene,

Thank you for the excellent response. Once I updated MDAC to 2.8 SP1 I was able to install SQL Server SP3 without any issues.
