Are you able to connect to the server and browse the database list? Are their times that you CAN connect to the server?

Is this server on the same subnet as your computer? (What is the IP address of your PC)

ATTEMPT: file > database > open and in the server box, enter the ip address of the server and click open
RESULT: Same error message. The IP is not replace with the server name.

Q: Are you on one domino domain? Is your user ID in the same domain as the server you are trying to connect to?
A:the client ID file i use was generated by the domino server and i imported it to my local notes folder.

Q: Is this a windows server?
A: Yes, Win Server 200

Q: Are there other services (such as file or print shares) that you can connect to but cannot connect to domino?
A: No this is the sole purpose of the domino machine

Q: Are there any routers between you and the server?
A: To my knowledge, no

Q: Do you have other computers on your network that can connect to this server?
A: This is tricky because there are only three notes clients in our network. The first being on the actual server can browse the domino stuff, yet cannot add a new users as it cannot find the path to the server. The second being mine, well you know about this. The third being my boss, who can do everything. Every other person uses a ms client to get their emails which is working absolutlty fine.

HISTORY:
The domino server use to run on an old p1 machine. Recently we transfered the system onto a new p4, gave the new machine the same ip address as the last. After this my connenctions act as stated in the question above. THe server machine name is different yet the domino domain has remained the same.

Q: Are you able to ping the server by server name? ping newc1.(your internal domain)
A: Yes

ATTEMPT: I would delete the connection document and try to connect via the same method as I described above.
RESULT: Same Problem

Thanks for your responses :)

So if I understand this correctly, you have a notes client installed on the server and that notes client cannot add users? (gives the same, cannot find path to server message)

This sounds like when you are on the notes client local to the server, you are browsing databases as "local" vs. connecting to the server name.

Did you check the connection document on your boss's computer? Were the values identical to the ones in your connection document?

Can you check the server document, in the Notes address book on the server? What are the network connection settings (Network type, name, ip address) as defined in the server document?

I recommend trying to telnet to the server via the port that notes connects on, but I cannot recall what port that would be and what it should respond with to assure you that the server is receiving your connection attempt.

Do you see any connection error messages in the log file? On the server console screen when you attempt a connection?

I am at the end of my rope with this one - its been a few years since I've worked on a domino server although I am a Principal CLP Admin and Dev in R4 and R5. :)

I would also reboot the server at the earliest opportunity. This seems to help, and should be done every few weeks.

In addition, I would check that there are no WINS or AD/ DNS issues, especially since you changed the name of the server in win2k, but are using the same IP address.

I hope this helps !

to all: Thanks for the help, but everything is the same and i cannot find anythign to help me out. Therefore i am going to split the points as i see fit. sorry if this upsets anyone but i can only give what i think was the most helpful under the circumstances.
Huh? The problem isn't solved and yet you award points? That's not right, to nobody. You had better put a question in Community Support to ask for the removal of this question. On the other hand, your comments to help us find your problem were quite insufficient.

If you still have the same issue, then explain what happened when you try each of the suggestions above. I think all participants in this question are willing to help you to find a solution. I don't mean to be rude, but if you don't have the time to follow up a question, why ask one? You were disappointed that the right one wasn't there? The problem you mentioned is "usually" a trivial one, but in some cases impossible to solve. Give us some more leads, we'll analyze what you say and try to suggest new roads.
