FTP error 550 the system cannot find the file

I am running on server 2003 and have the FTP setup as isolated users.

I had this working last Friday but now I'm getting this error message.  I have double checked the permissions and all appears fine.  It is no problem getting to our FTP home page (files.cericus.com), and getting a log on prompt but it is not allowing any of the accounts I have setup to access their home folder local path.

The full error message is this:
FTP Folder Error
An eror occurred opening the folder on the FTP Server.  Make sure you have permissions to access this folder.  Details:  550 /Astro/downloads: The system cannot find the file specified.

Thank you for your help,

Try adding the trailing slash to the path.

/Astro/Downloads/

Which path are you referring to?  /Astro/downloads is in the error message that the client sees.

Thanks,
When the client logs in they are directed to a folder - this is set in the FTP Virtual server properties.  Just make sure the trailing slash is there.  Also, make sure the permissions are set correctly in the Virtual server and on the NTFS folder for this user.

Sorry for the time lapse.

Let me just add that with an FTP client the user is able to access their folder without problem.  Why one way works and not the other may need to be asked in another posting?

When you refer to 'FTP Virtual server properties'  do you mean the properties for the FTP site in 'FTP Sites' in IIS manager?  If so, under FTP site directory local path: I have, D:\ftproot\

Permissions for the virtual server are currently at full control for each client (which is probably more than necessary but I'm just trying to get it working).  Clients are able to get to their folder and see (read, write via the FTP client only)  so I think those are ok.

Thanks for your patience,
Are you using PASV mode when you attempt this?  It's likely the FTP software switches to PASV if it can't connect normally.

Not knowingly.  How do I check?

Ok, so I found an explanation of active mode and passive modes with FTP.  http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html

It would appear then that I am using PASV.
Sorry I'm late - your FTP software likely defaults to PASV, is it the MS FTP commandline client that isn't connecting?

Can you connect with Internet Explorer after setting up PASV access?

Here's how to do that:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=323446

If it is successful, then the commandline FTP is not going to work as I don't think it supports PASV requests.

Thanks for your help,

I cannot connect with either IE or Mozilla.

Ok, I tried your suggestion and that doesn't have an effect.  It looks like my firewall (PIX 501) is not allowing new 'unsolicited' connection attempts.  Would you agree?

I'm at a loss at this point.

Through a PIX?  That's relevant.

What ports are you forwarding?
Do you have any ACL's in place?

Are you using secure FTP on the site?
What have you checked for Authentication level on the FTP Virtual server?

Sorry I guess I should have mentioned PIX earlier.

I'm not too familar with how our PIX is setup.  I'll have to ask my consultant on the ports.  I am able to log on if you can tell me what I need to look at.
There are no ACLs setup.

We are not using secure FTP.  I wanted to get the basics working first.
I'm not sure where I need to look to tell you what the authentication level is.

Thanks,
I'm not a Cisco guru by any means.

I know who is...

Post a Q in Networking with the title - PING LRMOORE and link to this one.  This gentleman is Cisco to his gotchies !! :o)

If this is related to the PIX you'll know in no time flat.

I'll keep my eye on this thread in the event it's a combined issue.

Thanks, I will do that.

Quick question on posting in Networking...which subcatagory should I pick?  I'm not seeing anything obvious for an FTP question regarding PIX firewall setup.

I think my question there would be, 'Does the Cisco PIX (501) have specifc configurations to allow passive FTP support?'
Correction please

Thank you,
