( Error) Cannot copy xxxx: Access denied. The source file may be in use.
Very simple, here's what I'm trying to do:
Copy all files on the Library Shelf of a File Server (department files, home directories, etc.) to a USB 2.0 drive for backup, and moving to a new Library Server. I'd try gigabit ethernet to copy the files out, but I'd assume I'd get the same error (and in either case, i'd like to clear it up).
Random files get this error:
Cannot copy xxxx: Access denied. The source file may be in use.
What's the problem?
Random file types, old .psts that aren't being used, just stuff that was archived a while ago that hasn't been used in a while. that sort of thing. I used "IsUsedBy" from this thread: [ https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/21501935/Outlook-personal-folders-backup-access-is-denied-the-source-file-may-be-in-use.html ] and have had no luck- the program confirms the file is not being used.
Thanks!

While your trying to copy the files, are people accessing/using the server in anyway?

No, in fact I've taken the server offline just to ensure no stray users interact with the system. It's completely isolated.
Make sure there is no anti-virus running anywhere while you try to copy files. To rule out USB problems, try copying the files to another hard drive and see if it still happens.
Hi realzeroburn,
Have you rebooted the server? I've seen similar problems that were resolved once the server was restarted.

Use the builtin backup program to make a backup of these folders to your USB device. If that doesn't worl either, run chkdsk /x on all the drives you want to make backups from. The server will probably need to reboot to do that and it can take a long time, depending on the size of your disk, up to 8 hours for 160GB.

Nothing unfortunately. It doesn't look like anything's using the file at all, it's always the same files, and always the same problem on these files- they just won't copy. since it's the same files i assume it's not a random chance occurance, say a scanner hitting the file at the same time it's trying to be copied.

several times ..

i actually had another problem, it was the same problem actually- different error. said i didn't have permissions to access the file, so i took overship and forced inheritance down to all the files (took a while) and don't get that error anymore, it's this access denied in-use one.

i'll try a chkdsk and see if that fixes anything. i assume it's a fault on the file itself at this point, probably got corrupted over time at one point or another ..

Just another step you could try ... (again do it for one file and then for the others..
After making your self the owner
{Select all the file/ folder that you wanna back up. (Use ctrl or shift to select more than one)
Right click on the files/folders
Click on properties
Click on the security tab
Clck on advanced. Click on the owner tab.
Double click on the administrator (this will make the admin the owner) Hit apply.
Hit ok and the close all the windows. }
Right click on the file. Uncheck "allow inheritable permissions "
Hit apply.. Then again put a check mark and hit apply.. (Just make sure that "everyone" and "system" become part of the list.
(This ideally happens because of the Security the NT incorporates with NTFS. Only the user who has created the file an view it.. But sometimes it so happpens that the user also cannot transfer files from one location to another because the system does not have access to the file. So just adding system to the file properties will also help)

Thanks Lance, I actually already took ownership as mentioned by nobus earlier. Don't think that's the case ... A lot of the files are non-user specific as well, just public files on the library. So it doesn't appear to be a permissions problem.
I've done a robocopy and ignore all errors, just so i can get at least the 99.9% of the other files across. If the only files are old files that aren't used anymore anyway, I'm just going to have to leave them behind when we move to the new library.

The ownership part is ok.. Just make sure that the "system" is also included as part of the owners.
